Netizens were already divided on the fact that 18-year-old Malia Obama missed this year’s National Democratic Convention in late July to attend Lollapalooza, a music festival held annually in Chicago, Illinois.
And then came the video of her ‘twerking.’ Some viewers responded by calling her a ‘wild child’ while others voiced ‘leave Malia alone.’
And now, a new video of Malia has been posted by Radar Online. In the short clip, she is believed to be smoking either a cigarette or cannabis, and most sources are claiming the latter.
Dancing is not a crime and according to this year’s Monitoring the Future (MTF), marijuana use and experimentation among 12th grade teenagers, similar to Malia’s age, is at 34.9 percent. In other words, not uncommon. Although this fact doesn’t make the act legal, it begs the question: do we or rather, should we, raise the president’s daughter to a higher standard? And is it our business?

The Early Years
Here’s Malia Obama with her younger sister Sasha in 2009, the year of President Obama’s first inauguration.
Just a few years later, the two ladies flash smiles and elegant looks for the camera. They’ve grown up so quickly.
Malia Comes Out As A Rebel, In The Best Way
The New York Times published an article titled ‘Malia Obama Rebels, Sort of, by Choosing Harvard’ earlier this year, noting that she disregarded her parents’ advice about her not having to attend a big name school. She went for the best, and got in.
The Gap Year
Before going in for the long haul, Malia decided to take a year off. Those who take a year off before attending university make up less than 1% of all high school seniors.
While those who do take a gap year usually come from upper class families, it seems to be a growing trend. Some colleges are even offering financial students for these future students to travel or volunteer during that time.
New York Times ‘Your Money’ columnist Rob Lieber told NBC News, “The colleges like it. They like having older kids in the classroom, it brings a wider variety of world experience and perspectives.”
All American Girl Turned Wild Child?
Headlines and stories everywhere put the heat on Malia when she attended the famous music festival Lollapalooza in Chicago instead of showing her support at the DNC. Others rose to her defense, saying that she is just a normal teenager.
Malia’s Actions Became News
A Consequence of Sound article even focused on her decision to see Major Lazer and Future instead of Radiohead.
Photos and Videos of Her Dancing Went Viral

Malia Shows Some Skin
While some photos were innocent enough, others revealed a more playful side. People are wondering who took these photos and why they would even post them.
The Public Responds to Her Actions
An overwhelming majority of social media users and writers, such as activist Deray McKesson, begged others to leave the teen alone. Again, some expressed relief that she was acting like a normal teenager. Those on the conservative side were outraged at what they described as her ‘downfall.’
A New Video Revealed
More recently, Radar Online posted a short video of Malia smoking what is assumed to be marijuana at the festival, but its authenticity hasn’t been confirmed.
